Travelling to compete

Shotwick sailors don't just confine their racing to our lake. As you can see from recent stories Shotwick members travel far and wide to get on the water and fly the flag for Shotwick.

Simon and Julie Dolman have already competed in the Border Counties Midweek Series, and early this year took first place in the Miracle Southern Championships. So we thought it was time to find out more about it and asked Simon and Julie to share their experience.

'Its been a few years now since Dave Turtle and Dave Thomas encouraged us to broaden our sailing experience by taking part in the Border Counties Midweek Sailing Series. At the time, we were still relatively new to racing and the idea of competing at open events was pretty daunting. But looking back, were so glad we took the leap.

Travelling with our boat to different venues has been a fantastic experience. We've met a wonderful community of sailors, made new friends and shared in the spirit of friendly competition. Its been incredibly rewarding—not just in terms of results, but in the relationships we've built along the way.
Weve been lucky to meet some truly inspiring people who have generously shared their time, advice and encouragement. Whether its tips at Shotwick or insights from fellow competitors at open events, we've learned so much—and continue to learn. A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has supported us on this journey.

Lately, weve had a string of great results—definitely punching above our weight! From strong performances at Shotwick and in the Border Series, to our (still slightly unbelievable) win at the Miracle Southern Area Championships. We definitely suffer from a bit of impostor syndrome because we appreciate the talent and experience of the other sailors and we have the utmost respect for them.
For us, sailing is about more than just competition. Its the joy of being at various venues,  the thrill of racing and most of all, being part of such a welcoming and supportive sailing community.

If youre curious about travelling to open events or would like us to share some of the invaluable tips weve picked up from others, please dont hesitate to get in touch. Wed be more than happy to help. '
